作品詳細

A maiko, during the period from adolescence until she becomes a geiko around the age of twenty, resides in an okiya. There, under the guidance of the okami and experienced geiko, she masters traditional arts such as dance, shamisen, taiko, flute, and etiquette. The exquisite beauty of her seasonal hair ornaments, kimono, and obi, along with her graceful presence on stage and at gatherings, is truly exceptional. Yet, what captivates me more are the soft shadows cast by sunlight filtering through the reed screens of a machiya, the meticulous yet swift application of makeup, and the dedication to dance practice in a secluded corner of a narrow alley.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), the American poet and novelist, wrote in "The Philosophy of Composition" that an appreciation of beauty in form, sound, scent, and emotion brings elevation and joy to the soul. Maiko, embodying these elements, combined with over 300 years of tradition, represent a rare aesthetic phenomenon. This book is a compilation of the "Maiko Tsurezure" series (I-III) available on Kindle, with some additions and revisions. It would be an unexpected joy for the author if readers feel a sense of ownership, texture, or a desire to keep this book close by.
